School policy for homework at Birkerød Gymnasium, STX, HF and IB
At Birkerød Gymnasium, we define homework broadly as schoolwork that is assigned by a teacher and expected to be completed by the student outside school hours, unless otherwise agreed.
Written assignments are not included in the definition of homework. You will find the framework for written assignments further below in this document.
Homework is assigned with a clear purpose so that you, as a student, know what to do and why. You will encounter variations in the forms and types of homework.
The form may include reading, drawing, writing, problem-solving, etc.
The types may vary between investigating, reflecting, revising, introducing new material, etc.
At Birkerød Gymnasium, you do homework in order to independently acquire and maintain academic knowledge and practise appropriate study skills.
When you are a student at Birkerød Gymnasium, it is important that you are prepared to consider homework a natural part of attending upper secondary school. It is also important that the amount of homework is manageable for you. You will therefore experience a progression from shorter and more structured homework in your first year to longer and more independent homework in your final year.
The goal is to ensure a reasonable and gradual transition from elementary/lower secondary school to upper secondary school and further studies. As a new student, you will be introduced to academic reading as part of the study modules, after which teachers will continue to focus on academic reading in their classes.
The framework for homework:
- As a student, you are expected to stay informed about homework every day in Lectio.
- Homework is always assigned and visible in Lectio and, as a general rule, will be introduced in the previous class.
- Homework is assigned by 16:00 the day before at the latest, but teachers aim to assign homework in Lectio immediately after teaching the previous class or to assign homework one week at a time.
- Homework will often be accompanied by a comment on how long you are expected to spend reading and preparing. Typically, this will be 15–30 minutes per subject. The amount of homework will be adapted to the school type, year group, and subject level.
- The homework will usually be accompanied by a comment on how to work with the homework.
- If you have a written assignment in the subject, your teacher should take this into consideration when assigning homework for the module prior to the deadline for the written assignment.
- If you are absent from one or more classes, you are obligated to catch up on and learn the content that was taught in the class or classes you missed. This may include material used or data produced/collected in class.
The framework for written assignments:
- For written assignments, you should have at least one weekend available to complete the assignment.
- There will always be a specified number of hours indicating the time you are expected to spend on the assignment.
- It will often be clarified how long the assignment should be in terms of pages or characters.
- Teachers aim not to exceed 10 student hours per week for written assignments, and the total may never exceed 15 hours per week.
